Fun with Science

The other night at Enrichment, one of the women from our Ward gave a wonderful talk about how to entertain a preschooler. She had a bunch of fun ideas that I can't wait to do with Tyler and Chase. One idea was to build a playdough volcano.

All you need is the following:
Baking Soda
Play dough
Vinegar
Strawberry flavored Kool-Aid (any red Kool-Aid will work)
Shallow dish

You build the volcano in the shallow dish, put baking soda and kool-aid in the volcano and then pour on some vinegar. Soooo easy!!! This kept the boys entertained forever. I would suggest getting a huge container of vinegar cause they used a lot of it!!! :) I LOVE science!!!!

Here is a closeup of the beautiful volcano Tyler created.

You can definitely see the reason for the shallow dish in the picture above. The lava has to go somewhere. :)

I love Chase's reaction after he adds the vinegar. It is absolutely priceless!!! I can't wait to try out the other ideas that she had.

My little scientists!!! :) I hope they continue to love it. It would be fantastic to have a doctor in the family.

Hi, I'm Jean, Chelsea's aunt from WA. I chose to follow the link and I'm so happy I did. We have grandkids tomorrow and I'm thinking the ugly blended play dough will have a place to meet it's rightful end. Thanks, from the farm in Bow

HAHAHAHAHA!! I love Chase's reaction!! Seriously hilarious! I loved making volcanos when I was a kid! Mom used to do all kinds of stuff to keep us entertained!

I saw something cool on Ellen with her science guy... I think it might be more than you want to spend though... it had big plastic garbage can with a hole cut out at the bottom and the top was covered tightly with a clear plastic shower curtain. They had a strap on it, though I don't think thats necessary, just makes it easier. It makes an air gun (not really gun). You can put a paper cup like 20ft away and see if the kids can blow it over. They used smoke to fill the garbage cans so that you could see where you were aiming. Awesome! Maybe I'll have to make that with them ;-)!

The boys look like they're having so much fun discovering new ideas. Chase's expression is adorable, life can be such a mystery at that age. I'm so glad your Enrichment Leader so on the ball and does such wonderful classes.

I love Chase's face in that photo! Isn't it amazing how the simplest things are so amazing to little ones? Although, the volcano is, admittedly, super cool.

That picture of his reaction is AWESOME. Kate I wish I had your email address since I've been wanting to write you ever since you left to thank you for coming and tell you how great it was to see you. Seriously, it's a long way to drive and I appreciate the sacrifice you guys made to come up here.
You are a good blogger because you tell stories and post good pictures and you do it frequently. I should take a page...
